Absolute Beginners - An all day music and arts festival
Around this time last year we lost one of our closest friends, Michael 'Mick' Cunningham.
He was a regular at The Kings Arms, a dear friend and to our knowledge, the biggest David Bowie fan on earth.
In tribute to our pal Mick, and to the Cosmic Duke himself, we have put together an all day music and arts festival:
Absolute Beginners.
Featuring:
The Happy Soul
The Happy Soul are a 4 piece melodic power-pop group from Manchester UK.
Influenced by Bowie, Nilsson, The Beatles and The Mothers of Invention, they recently released their second studio album, 'BIG WOW' to critical acclaim.

Operation Lightfoot
'In 2013, I founded Operation Lightfoot, a continuing series of collaborations with a diverse array of guest singer-songwriters and musicians, with the aim of incorporating other art forms. It attracted a record label shortly after our debut performance, which funded the initial recordings and releases. It soon became my flagship project as a composer, songwriter, and more recently as writer and director of one act plays and short films. Operation Lightfoot’s creative team includes regular collaboration partners from almost all creative disciplines. This means that we have a very broad collective skill set, an understanding of each other’s process, and plenty of experience working together. Collaboration is perhaps the best way to learn, develop and produce something that is greater than the sum of its parts. It is central to Operation Lightfoot, which features some of the most outstanding musical talent from across the UK, and expanding performances to incorporate elements of theatre, dance, visual art, photography and film making.'

Chloe Foy
Chloe Foy writes a brand of melodic, homegrown music that has been likened to such artists as Laura Marling and Sharon Van Etten. Her songs are imbued with lyrical and textural inflections evocative of much of the music she loves - taking inspiration from classical music as much as wider transatlantic trends in folk and indie music, Chloe’s songs comprise of carefully constructed arrangements that delicately compliment her cryptic lyrics.
In 2017 she was chosen to collaborate on a residency with Mercury prize-nominated artist Beth Orton and this year has seen her gain the backing of some highly influential industry figures after a string of dates at SXSW festival. Her performance at The Driskill garnered support from Bob Boilen and NPR’s late night dispatches. Chloe has received substantial support from Steve Lamacq on his BBC Radio 2 & 6 shows, and singles ‘In The Middle Of The Night’, ‘Flaws’ and ‘Asylum’ have featured on a wealth of Spotify official playlists including Lost In The Woods and The Most Beautiful Songs In The World, generating over 3 million plays.
She has spent the summer touring in support of Jesca Hoop, also providing backing vocals in Jesca’s band and has her first headline tour in the Autumn.

Dorothy Bird
Dorothy Bird’s music creates spaces in which her voice can shine a light out of the dark. Using a mix of analogue synths, electronic rhythms, guitar, occasionally strings and skillful arrangement, Dorothy treads a bold path between the intimate and the epic, the ethereal and the concrete, from deep sub bass movement to glistening vocals and delays and often in combination with live visuals, she guides her audiences through an all-encompassing and emotional experience.
