WITHOUT MALICE OR ILL WILL
WITHOUT MALICE OR ILL WILL is a monologue delivered by a retired police officer. He tells us of his early life in a mining community, his first job as an NCB apprentice and how he was persuaded to give up mining and join the police force. We then hear about his career, particularly during the year of the strike and the infamous Battle of Orgreave, when he had to face his old mates across the picket lines , and face the divided loyalties between duty to his oath, his uniform, his friends, family and his old community. The play ends with him reflecting on how the strike impacted, and continues to impact, on him and his community even thirty-odd years later. Originally written under commission to EXPERIENCE BARNSLEY museum as part of a trilogy in 2014/15. This new version for 2019 now reflects the political and social changes since it's first performance and proves that the questions it raised then are still relevant to a modern audience. Written and performed by Ray Castleton who's play ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE was nominated in the best drama category at last years festival and won best theatre award at the Buxton Fringe.
