Amelia Coburn
22nd April 2023 - 7:30 pm
The Kings Arms

With
a natural gift for distinctive, timeless melodies and a truly
captivating performer, BBC Folk Awards finalist Amelia Coburn heads out
on a short Spring tour before starting work with Bill Ryder-Jones
(Founder member of The Coral, producer for Brooke Bentham and the award
winning “Dear Scott” by Michael Head and The Red Elastc Band) on her
debut album of original material in May.

Having
started 2023 with an international appearance in Finland, following on
from a successful year on the English Folk Expo mentoring scheme which
saw her perform at Cambridge Folk Festival, Focus Wales and in her own
right across the UK with a sold out debut solo tour Amelia thrives on
the inspiration that travel brings her. Many of her exquisite original
compositions stem from people and places she has discovered during and
after her language studies.

Amelia’s
affinity with the sea and love of folk music along with an open-minded
attitude to songwriting and arrangements made Bill the perfect choice
when looking for a producer. His own heartfelt, stripped back solo work
struck a chord with her too as she has increasingly explored her own
existence, mortality and emotional connections in more recent work such
as on The Ebb and The Flow EP released last year which received national
radio play and plaudits.

Support from Calum Gilligan:

Calum is a songwriter and guitarist from Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, now based in the beating heart of British music, Liverpool. Influenced by the likes of Christie Moore, Paul Brady, Paul Simon, Joan Baez and Woody Guthrie, he plays a subtle blend of Scottish, Irish and American folk music with captivating imagery and the lyrical maturity of a much more experienced songwriter. His guitar playing provides enough intricate melodic accompaniment to his singing that he can easily command a stage and captivate an audience on his own. Calum has been described as a ‘gifted musician, playing the guitar beautifully…’ by Spencer Leigh from the Liverpool Echo, and as ‘… a gifted songwriter with a voice to back it up’ by Folk Radio.
